Abstract

The relevance of the values of the Abbasid Caliphate government to the Indonesian state system reflects an effort of reflection in re-examining the dynamics of history and the concepts of the classical Islamic government system. Several aspects of the system have normative relevance to the principles adopted in the Indonesian state system, especially in terms of justice, leadership integrity, and the formation of character and community morals. Although structurally and ideologically there are fundamental differences between the caliphate model and the modern nation state, a number of principles from the Abbasid era can still be a source of inspiration for strengthening the current government system. Concepts such as responsible leadership, the involvement of intellectuals in the political realm, and the importance of political education that influences ethics are important elements in adapting the classical Islamic heritage to the context of the pluralistic and democratic Indonesian state.
